Course Description:
Diagnosing oral mucosal lesions is always a challenge because of the sheer number of possibilities. However, it takes more critical thinking when patients of color have physiologic oral pigmentation that may mask, distract, or change the “classic” appearance of common and important oral diseases. Complex medical histories, polypharmacy, unfamiliar cultural traditions, and communication and trust issues add to the complexity of diagnostic care. Case-based scenarios will compare and contrast the role of melanin pigmentation on the appearance of normal oral conditions, select symptomatic and systemic diseases, and potentially malignant lesions. Strategies will be discussed for asking key questions and documenting the mucosal findings in patients of color so that the correct diagnosis and treatment are not delayed. In diverse communities, it is obvious that many patients do not match textbook images when they seek oral health care!
Objectives:
This course is designed to improve the participant’s ability to:
1. Describe the role of oral inflammation and other causes in triggering reactive melanosis.
2. Compare and contrast the clinical appearance of symptomatic oral lesions in patients of color.
3. Identify important features of potentially malignant diseases and the impact of oral pigmentation.
